    Preparing for the PRM exams

A question facing the PRM aspirant is whether they should study from the handbook, or consult additional text books or reference materials. Unlike someone doing full time studies for a university course, the typical PRM candidate is generally juggling a demanding career, family and social life all at the same time while having to prepare for the PRM exams.

The fact of the matter is that there is so much *very good* material out there that one can study that one could be reading books and reference material forever. In my view the best way to prepare for the PRM exams is to stick to one book or reference source, and just do it well instead of preparing from a number of sources. In my view, the PRM handbook is the best resource available, at least for the PRM exam. Of courrse you can refer to Hull, or Jorion or Fabozzi or any number of great books to understand any particular topic that you want more clarification on, but for the most part the PRM handbook is enough.

Mind you – the handbook isn’t exactly bedtime reading – it is now about 1500+ pages of dense text, lots of math and tricky stuff. But at least it is all in one place, and consistent. One problem I found when trying to consult multiple resources for the same topic was that it was often difficult to reconcile the differences in detail between the two, starting with each text book using a slightly different notation. Also, each source would go into more detail on a particular aspect than the other leaving me confused as to which part I needed to learn and remember for the exam.

In the end, I ended up using just the handbook, and really not much else. Even that was a big task as I had a 12 hour a day job, and demands from the family over the weekends. The only thing I found missing in the manual was test questions, which is what prompted me to build this website.
