I realise this is a bit late in the day, but in case anyone else was interested to know…
I sat the PRM level I two weeks ago and passed with 75%. It is definitely more conceptual than calculations based, but that can change as they select questions from a random bank, with the number of questions selected from each section weighted by each sections weighting (You can find this on the PRMIA website).
The calculations were definitely harder than the Kesdee questions and Riskprep – there was a lot more inference to make. It wasn’t straight forward “Calculate the risk of this portfolio”, it was “Calculate the weightings of these assets, given this is a 0 variance portfolio and the beta is this…etc etc”, so you needed to do a lot more workings out, but using the same understanding. The conceptual questions I would say are similar to the Kesdee and Riskprep questions and fairly straight forward.
This is not like exam II, where I found the Kesdee exam questions seriously lacking and the Riskprep questions much more representative. In exam I Kesdee does a much better job.
